The story behind it:
The Child Emperor: Pu Yi
was the last emperor of the Qing dynasty and thus the last monarch of China. He ascended the throne in 1908 at the age of two and reigned as Emperor Xuantong for only a very short time: he was forced to abdicate as early as 1912, after the Xinhai Revolution.
The Puppet Emperor : In 1924, due to political upheaval , Pu Yi was forced to leave the Forbidden City for good. In 1932 , Japan installed him as "Emperor" in the Japanese-controlled state of Manchukuo.
After the end of World War II , Pu Yi was captured by the Soviet Union and later transferred to China . There he spent nearly a decade in a re-education camp.
He was pardoned in 1959 and subsequently lived a rather secluded life as a citizen of the People's Republic of China , working as a gardener and later as an employee of a research institute.
