The story behind it:
Portugal has a long history with Asia, dating back to the 15th century when Portuguese explorers were one of the first European powers to arrive in Asia.
After Vasco da Gama circumnavigated Africa (1498), the Portuguese reached India and began to build their trading empire from there. They reached as far south as the Indies, from where they exported spices, silk, porcelain, and other goods to Europe.
